Criminal justice recidivism rates among people with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders are often higher than those of the general population. Efforts to lower these recidivism rates have resulted in several evidence-based practices including Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) and specialty courts. This webinar will look at how peer support uses evidence-based practices and how peer support can contribute to the reduction of recidivism rates using recovery-oriented practices.

People with personal experience with criminal justice and behavioral health conditions are increasingly included in services designed to support individuals re-entering the community from incarceration. This webinar will address a key element in the success of these programs: developing partnerships with diverse providers and community members so appropriate warm handoffs and connections can be made.

Elissa Nulton, chief operating officer for Peerstar LLC, is from central Pennsylvania where she grew up and lives today. She is actively involved in the development and oversight of the Forensic Peer Support Program. She assisted with the Forensic Peer Support Study with Yale University, evaluating forensic peer support programs operating as jail re-entry programs for inmates with serious mental illnesses and/or co-occurring substance abuse disorders in six Pennsylvania county jails.

Christy DeFeo, director of forensic programs for Peerstar LLC, completed an internship with an outpatient drug and alcohol rehabilitation program that provided people of all ages the knowledge and practice of recovery. She has been working in the field of human services for the past 7 years.
