Spend the day at the Baltimore Museum of Art this Sunday learning about African-American history makers from Maryland at the African-American History Month Family Day: Maryland Icons.
From 1-5 p.m., there will be storytellers, dance and music groups, artwork by African-American artists and a chance to dabble in art. The planned activities include:
1-5 p.m.
Art-Making Workshops Construct colorful furniture in the style of Baltimore artist Tom Miller and add a piece of Maryland history to the community-story quilt.
Self-Guided Family Tours Explore art work by three African-American artists who lived and worked in Baltimore, including Joshua Johnson, Tom Miller, and Haywood Bill Rivers.
1:45 p.m.
Gwen Marable Listen as Gwen Marable shares the story of Maryland native Benjamin Banneker-America’s first African-American mathematician and scientist.
3 p.m. Rayn Fall Dance Studio Ensemble & Dancing Many Drums Watch Rayn Fall Dance Studio as they present “The Light of Day: A Journey through the African Diaspora,” an original Afro-Modern dance performance. A multi-media dance theatre presentation by the Dancing Many Drums Scholars follows.
4:15 p.m.
Walter Jones Hear Walter Jones weave a wonderful tale about Talbot County-born abolitionist, author, and Baltimore dock worker Frederick Douglass.
