At its broadest, “black artist” may mean simply an artist whose formative experience was in the black community. In his visual language the black artist is basically a realist. Jacob Lawrence - African American Visual Artist. His best-known works of art are his series on historical and social themes, such as Toussaint L’Ouverture, Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman.

Ellen Powell-Tiberino - African American Visual Artist. Ellen Powell Tiberino (1937-1992). Graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Illness was so much a part of her life. Respect for time was important to her. She died at the age of 55.
