African American Art Quotations (49 hits)

“Not every artist who is black can be called a “black artist” if the term is to be meaningful. At its broadest, “black artist” may mean simply an artist whose formative experience was in the black community. In his visual language the black artist is basically a realist. Black art is a social art and it must be communicative.”

Edmund Barry Gaither - Director and Curator of the Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists (NCAAA), Boston, MA

“It is important that an artist study life than study the technique of painting exclusively. Technique will come with desire to make oneself understood. It is more important for the artist to develop a philosophy and clarity of thought.”

“There are people who hold onto the [concept of black] for other reasons; they feel that it’s important for sociological reasons, for heritage. These are those who feel that if this philosophy were held onto that somehow their art would be more vital-it would bring an energy to it.”

Jacob Lawrence - African American Visual Artist. His best-known works of art are his series on historical and social themes, such as Toussaint L’Ouverture, Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman.

“When I am asked where I get my inspiration, I say it’s all my life, my friends, everything I’ve seen and known, and I want to make it all come together and make sense and make people see there’s a feeling of joy that comes with it.”

Ellen Powell-Tiberino - African American Visual Artist. Ellen Powell Tiberino (1937-1992). Graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Illness was so much a part of her life. Respect for time was important to her. She died at the age of 55.
