Art and culture have held an active and significant part in Carroll County's history. In the mid-1950s Delphi Community School Corporation art teacher Jack Sanders teamed with the Delphi Tri Kappa to create an environment to showcase student, local and state art. The location and the concept of the event have experienced several modifications since its inception.
According to Tri Kappa Art Chairperson Carolyn Wood, Carroll County art patron and member of the Hoosier Salon, Betty Revington, suggested to Sanders in 1956 that the school and her state group join forces. The tradition was born. The first art show was held that year in the REMC building. It was later moved to the high school and included works from elementary through high school students with contributions from former students and the Hoosier Salon.
Wood said the show was considered to be the most unique one in Indiana and a source of pride for Sanders.
This year' show, billed as a special tribute to the late Jack Sanders, will be held in the rotunda of the Carroll County Courthouse and feature works from 10 former students. They are Jane Walker Marzoli, Lynn Thomsen, Barry Bowling, Sara Daly Brosman, Brenda Daly Reid, Gene Kidwell, Mary Helen Mears Abbott, Lara Weckerly VanMatre, Maureen Leahy and Janice Coghill Ward. Their art will be on display Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The traditional "Tri Kappa Art Show Tea" with punch and cookies will be served Sunday in the courthouse lounge.
"This is our first year in the courthouse rotunda," Wood said. "There were historic reasons for us to do this in the beautiful county courthouse."
"We really wanted to make this simple this year," she continued. "That's why we decided to focus on a message to honor Jack Sanders."
Show visitors are asked to enter the courthouse from the south doors. Admission is free.
