A colored-pencil drawing by Brent Malskeit, 9, is the local winner of the 2009 RAGBRAI Kids Art Contest.
The artwork by the fourth grader at Lewis Central Titan Hill will be on display in the Council Bluffs Public Library until mid-July, along with four other top entries. Then the artwork will be displayed at the Mid-America Center for the start of the 37th annual RAGBRAI on July 19.
Council Bluffs is the starting point for the 2009 Des Moines Register's Annual Bike Ride Across Iowa, which is expected to bring thousands of riders, family members and friends to the area. The Mid-America Center will be the place vendors, campers and others gather.
Brent's artwork is automatically entered into the finals of the statewide Kids Art Contest. The top winner will receive $350.
Advertising"We had entries from the Council Bluffs school system, including Carter Lake, and from Lewis Central," said Becky Burgart, the RAGBRAI volunteer coordinating the local contest. "Brent's drawing also says 'Welcome Riders,' which is exactly what our community wants to convey."
RAGBRAI will end July 25 in Burlington.
