
Life Magazine Photographer Howard Bingham and NASCAR’s First Black Competitor Derek Strong
Target Sundays@CAAM producer and actor Jeffrey Anderson-Gunter will team with musician and actor Art Evans in hosting a full program of activities during the June event at the California African American Museum in Exposition Park on Sunday, June 7. The event, sponsored by Target Stores on the first Sunday of the month, will focus on celebrating Black Music Month, the release of a new book by renowned photographer Howard Bingham and will introduce Derek Strong and his NASCAR racing car to Los Angeles. Former NBA basketball player Strong is the first African American owner/driver on the NASCAR circuit. CAAM galleries will open at 11:00 am. The Public Platform section of the program will include the actress Regina Taylor, who will share information about “Crowns,” the recently opened co-production from the Pasadena Playhouse and the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center. Strong and his partner Erica Hill will discuss their entry into NASCAR racing. At 1:40 pm, photographer Howard Bingham, whose work is featured in the current CAAM exhibit, “A Moment in Time: Bingham’s Black Panthers,” will talk about his career and his newest photography book, “Black Panthers 1968.” To be released this summer, preview copies of the book will be available at CAAM for purchase and Bingham will be signing books purchased at the event. Saxman And R&B Singer Andre Delano
Fresh off a world tour with Lionel Ritchie, saxophonist and singer Andre Delano, in conjunction with KJLH Radio Free 102.3, will kick-off Black Music Month at the Catalina Bar & Grill (6725 W. Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA) on Thurs., June 4 at 8:00 p.m. This Black Music Month celebration will feature the newly produced video for Delano’s latest single “The Da Da Song,” from his “My So Fine” (7th Note Entertainment/Nu Groove Records/Sony Red) album. On the “The Da Da Song,” Delano displays his versatility by not only exhibiting his sensational sax ability, but by showcasing his beautiful vocal skills on the track, which is reminiscent of Motown’s Jr. Walker and the All Stars.
Delano has been playing sax since he was eight years old and has worked for or toured and opened for artists like Stevie Wonder, Lionel Ritchie, Maxwell, Bobby Womack, Jeff Lorber, Chieli Minucci, Doc Powell, Bobby Lyle, Boney James, Norman Brown, Peabo Bryson, Peter White, Rick Braun, Kenny G and George Duke.
