The Shifting American Flag: Black Artists (Re)present America (92 hits)

*The American flag serves as a very effective symbol of Americana. It encompasses all facets of American life from the social to the political, and is an exemplary tool for the Black artists commentary on Blackness within America. Simultaneously, it is an emblem recognizable not only within U.S. borders but also around the globe, making it an easy choice for communicating a complex message to the black community as a whole, not just black academia. The shifting American flag can conform to any construction of meaning.
